We are all systems go finishing a movie on the making of Sonic Bench_Mexico. Claudia has nearly finished the edit and I am doing the tricky mix down of the 12 channel piece for 6 subs and 6 mids and tweeters for stereo and the internet. Bah. Gradually it comes. The slipping tones lie nicely with the smoothing concrete. What a labour and a learning that was eh Fernando & Fernando? Thank you!
Question, Arte Alameda, Mexico City, how is the Bench? Still buzzing butts?

News through from the Stapelbäddsparken in Malmö. I need to decide where exactly to locate the Bench on the roof. The conversion on the building is happening now and vents and holes are being cut for the electrics to pass through into the heart of the arts space beneath. Building due to open end of February 2011. Bench opening May 2011. Fab.

Excellent news. Mathias (Full Pull) and Caroline (Stapelbädden) have met with the Department of City Planning, and can now confirm that the City of Malmö will take care of the Bench site and its maintenance post install. Stapelbädden, in collaboration with mfb will be responsible for content.
In the next few days, I have to decide exactly where on the roof the Bench will go as they are doing the tricky drilling job for ventilation holes. Good. Things gets solid.

I had to leave this scene of vibration to catch the plane home. Good to be finally making very simple but clear experiments with transducers to assess the efficiency of wood, concrete and metal to transmit bass and sub bass frequencies accurately. Better still to be working with a group of local interactive sound design students sketching out some Bench design ideas.
We look for sustainable solutions. INFO for ongoing process.

It is cold and sunny in Malmo. This is the front of the Stapelbädden centre on the roof of which we will install Sonic Bench_Malmo in 2011. As ever, good to be in the real site and understand how Bench could function in this newly developing area.

I’m finally able to mix the Oliveros and Radigue works for the Sonic Bed in New York from SB in London and it’s fabulous. Fascinating too how different they are. Pauline’s I of IV creates vertical shafts of light which burst , spiking upwards in different places from under Bed like some 3D topographical meter reader. Eliane’s Kailasha on the other hand is curvaceous and enveloping. Wrapping the body in continuously shifting figures of eight, plaiting and redirecting themselves horizontally. Do I wish I could get to ISSUE to hear them there.

Rob has been on the phone. There’s trouble with the Bed at the Biorhythm Show in Dublin. “It’s screaming at everyone Kaffe !” Phone diagnosis, however, reveals that it’s that infrequent MOTU crash that produces random patterns of squawks and white noise, so easily resolved. Not bad I guess as it’s been running everyday for 2 months now.
NOTE: Only one more month to go (show closes 3rd Oct), so if you haven’t yet managed a visit, there’s time and – believe it or not – it’s only £30 for the train from Euston, all along the stunning northern Welsh coast and the ferry to Ireland. Stunning.
